The awesome GMT Master II has an updated style which was created in early 1980s. Like the style of the first GMT Master, this current model has an updated movement which enables the wearer to change the green 24 hour hand independently of another hands without impacting the present time. This enables the wearer to quickly leap from hour to hour and keep an eye on 2 time zones at a time, a desirable function for all those who travel often for example pilots.

This current style reference 116710LN also has extremely durable components which try to protect the beauty of the watch like a ceramic 24 hour rotatable bezel, resilient 904L stainless, and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Its impressive 40mm Oyster and case bracelet contribute to this GMT Master II’s look for a watch that can feel and look substantial on the wearer’s wrist.

After Being Passed over, since being discontinued it has had a resurgence and rightly so.
Rolex GMT-Master II truly does remain one of the best Rolex timepieces to own. The newer black and blue variant is simply either a precursor of things to come, or just Rolex’s way of demonstrating that they finally found a way to fuse two colors together – a revolutionary feat, in ceramic technology terms.

I bought this watch in 1988, and wore it almost daily for over 15 years,,, in the early 2000’s it started showing slight moistureunder the glass,, so i decided to send it to rolex for it’s first ( and much overdue) overhaul,,, it was supposed to cost $500, whichi didn’t mind paying considering the amount i wore it,, and for how long…Long story short,,, i didn’t even have to pay for the repair… the watch got stolen from the post office,,, so the usps ended up payingthe insurance,, i got another one,, it’s been 12 years now,, and it’s running as perfect as the original one…My only warning is with the USPS,, if you do send it anywhere… BUY the insurance… for the replacement value,, not what you paid…and also,,, be sure to have all the original paper work, and especially the receipt when you bought it… I found out the hard waythat the USPS will gladly sell you as much insurance as you’re willing to pay for… however,, when trying to collect,,, they want allkinds of information that most people would never have,,, and they’ll quickly refuse to pay your claim..They did originally refuse to pay my claim,, then offered only the money i paid for it new.. once i provided the receipt.. they wouldn’tpay the 6K I insured it for…. but i got very luck,,, since it was very clear the watch got stolen from within a post office building… theyeventually did pay the full amount of insurance… but it was a 3 month battle…Love the watch,,, love Rolex… beware of USPS..

The GMT Master II by Rolex is an unbelievably good watch. When you buy one you should look for a GREEN “Superlative Chronometer” hang tag. This signifies a change that Rolex made in summer 2015 where they now certify the watch to a higher standard of accuracy than the regular COSC testing standards. In addition they changed the warranty to five years.Rolex use a special high grade steel, different to what 99% of watch makers use. This has the distinct advantage of being far more durable than most watches you can buy. It also has a higher quality look if you hold a new Rolex next to another high end watch. The attention to detail is exquisite. They still make these watches by hand, and you really can tell it’s a quality piece just by looking. You have a beautiful ceramic bezel that can be used to measure a second and even third timezone. It rotates smoothly in either direction for that purpose. The face of the watch is a beautiful black gloss, and the markers and hands are made from white gold. Rolex goes the extra mile to make their watches last a long time, so they favor parts and materials that don’t corrode or look bad over time. The case and bracelet are a symphony of both brushed and polished metal that looks far more expensive than ordinary steel.Although the watch looks very similar to the ever popular Submariner, the lugs are slightly thinner and this watch is only certified to 100m or 330ft of water resistance, which is more than enough for those of us who don’t dive professionally. The hour hand can be set independently without stopping the movement, so you can set that to the local time zone without losing time while you make the change. The 24 hour hand can be set to home time giving you two timezone options. Alternatively you can set the 24 hour hand to read Greenwich Mean Time or universal time (UTC), and then the bezel can be rotated to give a third timezone. Although that’s pretty unnecessary for most people.I think you have to see this watch in person to appreciate it. It’s a classic design dating back to the 1950s, but make no mistake Rolex have been constantly tweaking and improving the design over the years. It’s bigger than it used to be, following the trend towards the larger watch, but at 40mm, Rolex have kept it well reigned in. They’ve switched to a higher grade of steel, they now make every component of the watch. And gone are the hollow bracelets of old school Rolexes that make you feel like you just bought the watch from a gas station. The current bracelets and clasps are exceptionally well made.Rolex has also done an excellent job at price fixing, by bullying their boutiques into sticking tightly to MSRP guidelines. This is frustrating when buying a watch, however, it does seem to do a great job of keeping up the resale value. On eBay right now there are plenty of examples of this watch being offered fairly close to full retail value, despite being a few years old. So while it may not be an investment, as some watch aficionados might try and tell you, it’s fair to say that if you sell your piece in 5-10 years, you can recoup most of your investment, unlike other manufacturers where the watch price falls in half on the first day of ownership and slips from there. If you decide to treat yourself to one of these, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. You can expect an expertly made timepiece that will almost certainly still be telling great time long after you’re dead.
